WWIWorld War I started off with high tensions in Europe/Asia. Countries were making alliances to come to each other's aid in time of need. Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire, and Bulgaria, consisted of the Central Powers. Great Britain, Russia, France, Italy, and the United States. The war in Europe started because of the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand. The US didn't start out on either side, they wanted to main a state of neutrality, or isolationism. They were transporting goods to both sides, but really seemed to favor the Allies side. The United States' transport boats would be sunk by German U-Boats, or Submarines. That would set them off, but not enough to join in the war. It was international law that was supposed to allow them to transport goods to either sides of a war, without interference. The Germans were breaking that law and the US threatened to join the war if they continued sinking their ships. Now, what really made the United States join the war? They intercepted a telegram from Germany to Mexico, this was called the Zimmerman Telegram. In It was a request for Mexico to attack the US in return to regain the land they lost in the US. The US immediately responded to it and joined the Allies side. They ended up winning the war. At the end of the war the Allies forced Germany to sign a treaty, the treaty limited their armed forces to something a small country would have.

Great DepressionThe Boll Weevil was a small beetle that would live inside a cotton plant and feed on the cotton. When it did this, it ruined the plant, rendering the cotton useless. Cotton was the primary source of income and one of the only plants/crops they would grow. In 1914 the reported number of total cotton bales was 2.8 million, and after the boll weevil, in 1923, the reported number was 600,000. On top of that, the following year there was a drought in 1924, which led to thousands of farmers to leave Georgia. Since all of these failing farms, no crops were sold and no money was made, which led to more and more people taking out loans, which they could not pay back. The day the stock market crashed was Tuesday, October, 1929, also called Black Tuesday. People started to riot since the could not get their money they had put in the bank, and the banks had given it all away to people who took out loans. As the depression went on, President Roosevelt started to implement New Deals. New Deals were programs designed to help people in the depression. One of the most successful ones was the REA, or the Rural Electrification Act. FDR came up with this plan from sitting in his home, also called the "Little White House," in Georgia. He was sitting on his porch and saw no lights coming from the neighboring farms, and his bill was much higher than his bill in New York. The Deal loaned out 300 million $ to companies to stretch out their power lines to farmers. Obviously it has still an affect today.

WWIIWWII was pretty much like how WWI started, Germany leading the Axis powers. Germany was led by Adolf Hitler, who led his loyal followers, the Nazi Party. The Nazi's were a political party, but they took over Germany, because everyone believed in what they were trying to accomplish. Hitler was a strong dictator, as was the Emperor of Japan, and Mussolini of Italy. There was also a huge craze for land, countries wanted to expand their empire. Japan was huge on this. Most of these countries were taking over Africa. On the Allied Powers side they were, Soviet Union (Russia), Great Britain and the US were the main powers. The United States tried to practice their neutrality, or isolationism again in this war. They again, were transporting goods to each side. They were seeming to favor the Allied side more, and the Axis Powers saw this. The US implemented a Lend-Lease Act which loaned guns to Great Britain and the USSR until they could pay it back. Germany started sinking ships again and pushed the US a little towards joining the war. The final blow to the US was Japan. Japan saw the US as a huge threat, in which they were, and they were the only people who could really foil their plans. So they decided to bomb Pearl Harbor. Thousands of troops and civilians died that day. Half the casualties were on the U.S.S. Arizona. The US then again, joined the Allied Powers. They started to take back the island counties Japan took over in the Pacific. The US kept requesting Japan to surrender, many offers were made and none were accepted. So President Truman made the ultimate decision to use the Atomic Bomb on Hiroshima. Once they dropped the first bomb they sent another request for them to surrender, and they declined. So they dropped another bomb on Nagasaki. Then they finally surrendered. After that the US made their push Through Asia into Europe, as they were pushing through, they slowly started to find concentration camps. They realized the Nazi's had started something called the Holocaust, it was a mass killing of Jews and non-whites. After seeing these horrific things, the US seriously reconsidered their isolationism acts.

Letter
Dear Father,
I know you probably wont see this, and I don't know if I will even see you again, but mother has taken over and started a job at the textile mill. All of out neighbors have jobs again, I can tell that depression is coming to an end, and that bank that closed is being re-opened now. Mother said she's not gonna put our money in that bank, she doesn't trust those things anymore, and I'm sure you wouldn't either. I know you would hate her taking on a job of her own, but she said she needed to put food on the table to keep us going. I'm helping her grow a garden, people are calling them victory gardens or something I'm not sure, but it seems like its helping out you guys, so we are doing it. We are also collecting scraps of metal and just random things that we don't need that can be remade into something else. Can you tell me what exactly is going on over there? Or is it too bad that I shouldn't know? Don't they read these letters anyway? Next month I'm going to work up in the textile mills to help make some uniforms, maybe I'll make one for you! And once i'm old enough I'll join up with you over there and help take back this world. I really hope that you get this letter, and I hope I get to see you again, alive that is.
