Story:
Hi, my name is Charlie Gordon, and I used to be just like you. I was your average everyday man with a future ahead. I went to a special school for people with the same problems as me, but one day, that all changed. They decided that it was the best for me if they performed a surgery on my brain that made me extremely intelligent. This surgery also got rid of my old limiting factors. People who made fun of me before stopped talking to me when I went back to work. I didn't care but eventually it got to the point where my boss had to fire me because of some stupid petition.
Anyways now I am here at the lab. They are apparently going to try something brand new. They tell me it has not always worked and I need to be very careful. Apparently they are sending me back to the prehistoric period of Georgia. They said it will only work in Georgia for some reason. Anyways when I arrived at the facility, they immediately rushed me in and started to perform some basic tests on me. After a few days of tests they told me what my mission was. I was supposed to go back and learn as much about the prehistoric period as possible. I agreed to do this, so they took me into the back. There was one major flaw, the bulk of the ride would take away all of the work that had been done on my brain, so I would be almost helpless out there.
I still agreed as I would remember my mission still. They strap me in and give me a countdown 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. I felt a pulling sensation in my gut as I squeeze my eyes shut. I don't remember much as when I landed, I immediately passed out. When I woke up, I noticed that I was beside a river. Across the river, there was a giant fort. I get up and hobble over to the gates. When I arrive, it seems as though I have some kind of chip inside my brain because of how I can understand all of the natives fluently. I ask them where I am and who were they and they responded almost immediately. They can understand me at least. This made me extremely happy. They said that They were the Mississippian people. They lived on the river and didn't do a lot of moving around. I asked if I could stay for a while and learn from them, which they said was fine. They welcomed me in and told me all about their feasts and activities throughout the days. They told me how they had invented a great new device, which they had named, the bow and arrow. They said it was almost time for afternoon supper, which they told me was going to be a feast. They told me how tonight was the Fall Equinox , or the first day of summer.
They said there was going to be all kinds of food there. They say they mostly have vegetables and other kinds of food that they grow in the ground. Another thing they talked about was how tomorrow they were going hunting. I asked if I could come along and observe them doing their procedures. They said yes I could tag along but I had to be very quiet. I agreed and we started out on our journey. I couldn't believe my eyes at the sight. These people from an ancient time, were so advanced that it almost knocked me off my feet. I watched as they stalked a deer, and with the utmost of power, rose up and pulled back their arrows. It was almost as fast as lightning. There was a quick scream from the deer, and it went down. They slung the deer over their shoulder and started walking back to the fort. It was amazing what they had just done.
As we headed back, I asked them what they used before the bow and arrow. They responded with we use the Atlatl, which was a device we could use to sling spears further distances. I was so intrigued by all of this, I almost didn't realize how far we had gone in the last 5 minutes. We arrived in the fort around sunset. I asked them what they did with the deer, and they said that they would take it to the women to clean and prepare for the feast. I followed them as they took it over. As soon as I walked inside, my nostrils were flooded with fresh smells. I could smell beans, sweet corn, pumpkin, and fresh bread being cooked in what looked like a pan. I was waved over by one of the women, who offered me a little bit of corn. It was absolutely delicious. I complemented her cooking and walked over to where they were preparing the deer. The first thing they did is thank their god for giving them this wonderful deer. Then, they properly prepared the meat and then started to carefully cook it. There looked to be little to no fat on it at all. Another thing they started to prepare was the traditional head dresses and other apparel for their feasts.
Soon it was time to eat. We all gathered under the centered pavilion and watched the performance. They danced around in the outfits, and performed what looked like and early form of a play. After that, we all dug into our food. It was like everyone had just woken up from a coma! Everyone was eating everything in sight. After this was over, The boys in the group went over into the field to practice archery, while the women started to go and create some pottery. I had observed so much over the time I had been here in this time. I told them I was going to head off and go to sleep. I think about how much I am going to be able to tell the scientists, and how I am going to be famous for telling the world this. I am so exited for when I get back. I start drifting further into sleep.
I can still here the celebrations going on outside. I wonder what would have happened if I was here without my knowledge, if I hadn't come from the future, and I was just born here with my disabilities. What would have happened? I don't think I would have survived more than a week.
I drift further and further until finally I fall asleep. The next day when I wake up, I start moving out towards the place where the machine landed. I thank the Mississippian people for allowing me to stay here in their home and then I start walking. It takes a good 20 minutes before I arrive at the machine. As I strap in, I am grateful towards the natives. I think about how they let me into their home not even knowing who I am and even feeding me. I think I have come out of this situation both smarter, and a better person. I push the buttons to go back, then I fall unconscious in the small tube. When I wake up, the scientists wanted to know everything, so I told them.

Every adversity, every failure, every heartache carries with it the seed on an equal or greater benefit. –Napoleon Hill
This quote in many ways relates to both Charlie and his struggles and to the prehistoric people of Georgia. It outlines that people have hardship, no matter who you are. Even so, out of that adversity, good things can happen too. It is important to know this. This is why I have chosen this quote.
Charlie had many hardships in life. He had a mental disability, which makes things harder. He couldn’t learn or comprehend some things and lacked some motor and social skills. It didn’t help that people made fun of his disability. He had an operation that enhanced his brain. During the time the operation worked he contributed to science so that other people with learning disabilities could be cured.
This quote also applies to the prehistoric people of Georgia. They had to hunt their own food and had no electricity. When European settlers came, they had to endure the diseases that they brought over such as measles and smallpox. After a while, the Europeans forced them to go to Oklahoma in something called the trail of tears. Many people died or got sick during the journey. These are just a few adversities that they faced.
