Alliteration: The occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words
Couplet: A pair of lines of metre in poetry
Hyperbole: exaggerated statements or claims
Imagery: uses words and phrases to create “mental images” for the reader
Metaphor: a comparison not using like or as
Rhyme Scheme: a plan of rhyme patterns within a piece of poetry
Internal Rhyme: rhyme that occurs between words within a verse line
End Rhyme: a rhyme that occurs in the last syllables of verses
Onomatopoeia: imitation of a sound made by or associated with its referent.
Personification: giving a non-human thing, human characteristics
Repetition: the action of repeating something that has already been said or written.
Rhythm: a patterned repetition of a motif, formal element, etc.
Simile: a comparison using like or as
Stanza: a group of lines in a poem
Pun: humorous use of a word or phrase so as to emphasize or suggest its different meanings or applications
Triplet: three successive verses or lines
Verse: writing arranged with a metrical rhythm
